There is no magic formula that will guarantee a great catch every time; that great spot you found last week may not garner a single fish today. The best bet is to follow accepted, proven techniques regularly - a long way of saying perseverance is your primary weapon!

Bait
Even though there is no fixed point on a map for good catches, unlike being lost and driving for hours instead of asking directions, there is simply no substitute for asking what's working for others. The first source is the local bait and tackle shop, then if that choice isn't working for you - don't be shy, ask the person down the beach with the full bucket what he's using!

Tackle
Keep your gear in proper working order - having a reel jam when you're halfway to landing what feels like your biggest catch ever is no fun. Be sure all of your equipment is properly cleaned, lubricated and stored during the off-season and between fishing trips. Everyone has a favorite brand of rod or reel, but different tastes and expected conditions will determine what is right for you. Do a comparison of the many makes for both feel and cost before making a final decision.

Places
Just about any beach will provide you with hours of angling and a decent catch using the right bait and equipment. If you're planning on hiring a charter, or going out on a party boat, the "where" is already in experienced hands - your part is to drop the line and haul them in.
