pend
a night at one of these interesting destinations and enjoy the same
charm that draws the summer tourists, at a lower cost and without the
minimum stays that are commonplace during the season.
Perhaps a stay in a nearby inn isn't as exotic
as a flight to one of the warm weather islands, but often a break from
the same four walls will do wonders for your demeanor during the gray
days of winter.
We've selected a few inns from various points
along the shore that have featured discounted rates in past years. Be sure to see
their Web sites for a complete range of current rates and to make firm
reservations.
At the southernmost reaches of the shore, in Cape
May, are two inns of note:
Southern
Mansion
Situated on two acres in the heart of the
Cape May historic district, this magnificent inn features a recently
completed south wing complete with two circular staircases.
Peter
Shields Inn
"The ocean is your closest neighbor" when you stay in this
elegant inn originally designed in 1907 to take advantage of seascapes and
ocean breezes.
Moving northward into Atlantic County, we chose two
more inns, to the south and north of Atlantic City:
The Carisbrook Inn
With the year-round popularity of this area since the advent of
casino gambling, the rates at this inn are similar in both seasons. We've
included it as an alternative to the high rises in Atlantic City a mile to
the north.
Mayer's Inn and Marina
Originally part of the Somers Plantations
settled in 1694, this waterfront inn dates back to 1884 and has housed a
number of organizations and sportsmen's groups in the years prior to the
current operation as a restaurant, inn and marina.
In the Ocean County town of Bay Head is:
Conover's Bay
Head Inn
Many antique shops and restaurants are
within walking distance of this inn that reflects the character of the
town with weathered shingles and a well manicured lawn.
Three more inns from the northern shore region in
Monmouth County will finish our exploration:
The
Beacon House
Centrally located in Sea Girt, this inn
offers easy access to the boardwalk in Spring Lake, entertainment and
dining in Manasquan and the outlet shops on the nearby highways.
The Chateau
A European style lobby with fresh flowers or
a crackling fire welcome guests to this 1888 Spring Lake inn
The
Nathaniel Morris Inn
Located in historic Manasquan near the beach, this spacious
1882 Victorian features private baths and balconies in each of four rooms
and two suites. In addition to the lower off-season rates there is also an
"internet special" for the second night at half-price if the reservations
are made online.
There are additional inns to browse through in our
main listings as well, chances are excellent that they'll have some variation on
their standard summer rates.
