The USS Monitor

The Ironclad Rises!

August 5, 2002

Monitor Expedition 2002 - A joint effort between the U.S. Navy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Mariners' Museum, has successfully raised the Monitor turret after 140 years underwater.

The first of its kind, the Monitor was originally launched on January 30, 1862, sinking less than a year later on December 31 - not in battle with the Virginia (damage pictured to the left), but while being towed into port during a gale off Cape Hatteras, NC.
