Introduction to Casino Gambling

During the period immediately following the legalization of casino gambling within the confines of Atlantic City there was only one game in town: Resorts International Hotel and Casino.

What a game it was too! Pent up public desire for "local" gambling brought both high and low rollers from not only the surrounding area, but from Delaware, New York and Pennsylvania as well.

At the busiest times, which seemed like all the time, it was impossible to get near the craps tables, long lines formed waiting for a chance to pull the lever on the one-armed bandits and the blackjack tables were two and three deep waiting for a seat. The only respite to the waits was provided by the $25 minimum blackjack games. With that kind of minimum if you were a low roller with maybe a couple of hundred dollars in your pocket, those "no-wait" tables represented only eight losing hands.

Resorts enjoyed their exclusivity for quite awhile because the legislation required that new casinos also operate hotels with at least 500 guest rooms. This portion of the law was designed to provide more potential jobs for local residents and keep the cost of entry high, in the belief that only more substantial operators would be interested in, or able to finance casino construction. Today, with a dozen or so casinos dotting the boardwalk and marina areas of the city, seats are available for the asking at all of the card games and thousands of nickel slot machines stand in neat rows whirring in stark contrast to those early days of an Eisenhower dollar as the minimum bet.

Each casino is similar, in that they all offer a complete variety of gaming tables and slot machines with all the latest innovations, but each imparts their own personality to your experience as well. The brief overviews that follow should help you get a basic idea of that personality by the names chosen for their various amenities and the outlines of the gaming floors, entertainment venues, restaurants, hotel rooms and any extras that may be mentioned by the casinos. The navigation below and to the upper left will guide you through this article and the casino titles at the top of each page will take you directly to the featured casino's home page.

Win or lose you'll have a good time in Atlantic City, no where else in the area will you find so many popular entertainers or such a variety of restaurants - many casinos feature well over six dining establishments and most have multiple entertainment venues as well.

Good Luck!
